Family's trip to movies saves them from car backing into apartment

LYNN, Mass. — A family had a close call as a driver backed into their apartment while they were out at the movies.

The car broke through the wall of the building on Chatham Street and Oakwood Avenue after witnesses say the driver was backing up and suddenly accelerated.

No injuries were reported in the incident, and the driver did not appear to be hurt when police arrived.

"I get here and the car is legitimately in my living room," Sasha Williams said. "Sitting on my couch basically."

Williams says the decision to go see a move last-minute with her daughter likely saved their lives, as they got a call from an Xfinity technician just as the movie was about to start.

"We had an appointment to meet at that time, and she said 'Well, I'm in the movie theater,'" the technician said. "I was on the phone with her when it happened, and all I heard was a loud 'Boom!'"

Williams' seven-month-old son was upstairs with his grandparents.

"The whole chair shook," the grandmother said. "So I came down, and this is what I saw."

The Williams' grandfather said disaster could've struck if everyone was home.

“They would have been sitting there," the grandfather said. "I just got the walker out of there, and it was crushed up against the wall, so the baby would have been crushed. So, thank god.”

The mother and her two children will stay upstairs with family members, and are unsure at this point if they will be able to return downstairs.

However, Williams was just happy that the worst-case scenario didn't play out.

“We wouldn’t have been here right now," Williams said. "What were you doing? What were you possibly doing that you weren’t paying attention? You could have took us out.”
