Cambridge Police investigating overnight armed robbery

CAMBRIGE, Mass. -- Cambridge Police are warning people to be cautious as they investigate an overnight armed robbery near Harvard University.

Police said the incident was reported after a person was attacked around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday.

The 27-year-old victim told police he was walking in the area of Flagg Street and Banks Street near the Corporal Burns Playground when he was approached by three people.

He said he was shoved onto a vehicle and put into a choke hold, while a second person held a gun to his stomach.

The suspects went through his pockets and grabbed his cell phone and wallet before fleeing the scene.

Although overall crime in the city is down 10 percent this year, a recent string of violent incidents is concerning to police.

“Kind of in that broader neighborhood, there’s been three incidents: two armed robberies, this being the second, and then there was an assault, an attempted assault on a woman,” Cambridge Police Public Information Officer Jeremy Warnick said.

So far nobody is in custody for this incident, and the crimes don’t appear to be connected.

“This was a bit more serious than your pickpocketing scenario. Certainly, it’s something that were well aware of and were putting boots on the ground to look into this a little further,” Warnick said.

Anyone with information should contact Cambridge Police.
