BU student arrested after racing 100 mph down Beacon Street

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Police say a Boston University student tore down Beacon Street at a hundred-miles an hour.

ZeGuang Xu, 19, is facing criminal charges for his dangerously fast ride. Police say he was driving his Maserati Gran-Turismo 100 MPH down a slippery, slick Beacon Street in the rain Wednesday morning and even ran a red light, all in the densely populated Back Bay neighborhood marked with digital signs saying 30 MPH.

Police were finally able to catch up with him at the intersection of Beacon street and Mass Ave. Once pulled over, Xu reportedly told officers he'd left his wallet and drivers license at home and that the Maserati belonged to a friend, which was a lie. Police say he even gave them a fake name and date of birth.

Officers later learned Xu did own the luxury vehicle and did not have a valid driver's license. He later handed over his wallet and BU student ID.

The intersection where Xu allegedly blew through that red light was Beacon and Fairfield Streets, the same intersection where another speeding driver killed Red Sox employee John Lanzilotti and his girlfriend Jessica Campbell as they were trying to cross the street this past June.

People who regularly drive in the area told FOX 25's Joy Lim Nakrin that speeding happens all too often.

Xu was arraigned on a series of criminal charges, including operating without a license, providing a false name to police, speeding, failure to stop, and negligent operation. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf and he was released on 1,000 bail. He's due back in court in December. Prosecutors said they're just relieved that this time no one was hurt.
