Bridgewater school doing away with senior prom

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — It's a rite of passage and tradition for millions of students across the country, but next year there will be no senior prom at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School.

Instead of a senior prom, students will go on a cruise on the Boston Harbor, called "Senior Sail." It'll be a semi-formal on a Boston Harbor Cruise Ship.

"For the cruise you have to wear cocktail dresses I guess and you don't want to get your hair and makeup done and then go on the boat so I just think it'll be less fun and experience for senior year," said Junior Molly McClellan.

Angela Watson, the school's principal, said it came down to cost and safety.

"Because we're providing the transportation they don't have to worry about limos or driving into Boston, it's safe they're all on coach busses," she said.

Watson said the students will be bused to Boston on coach buses and back to school for their senior lock-in.

"You're getting ready for graduation the last thing on earth you want is to see a student or group of students get hurt," said Watson.

Not everyone is on board with the "Senior Sail," with some students saying they feel like they're being robbed of a senior tradition.

The high school principal said if a majority of students don't like Senior Sail, she's more than open to going back to a traditional senior prom.
