Boston EMTs raising funds for colleague battling cancer for second time

The first responders at Boston EMS are among the first ones there when people need help. But this time, they’re hoping the community they serve can help one of their own.

EMT Bob Perez is a 29-year veteran of Boston EMS. He’s served as a dispatcher, training officer and mentor – and his work has impacted and saved countless lives.

"No matter how hard it is, he makes light of everything, everyone loves him as a partner," said EMT Elaine Gallagher, who serves as president for the Boston EMS Relief Association.

Perez beat prostate cancer for the first time back in 2015. But earlier this year, he learned the cancer was back – and worse than before.

He’s been unable to work during treatment, and turned to the Boston EMS Relief Association (BEMSRA) for help. BEMSRA’s mission is to support their members in their time of need.

“Anything from their house burning down, to being diagnosed with cancer, to even a car accident where they can't actually work,” said paramedic Jason Yutkins, who serves as treasurer on the BEMSRA board.

So far, BEMSRA has raised $15,000 for the Perez family – and hope to raise even more money at a benefit for Bob on Tuesday night in West Roxbury.

"Sometimes the helpers need help.  Bob is the epitome of a helper, so we as BEMSRA and as a department really want to give back to him and his family," said EMT and BEMSRA Secretary Carly Wellington.

While Bob's future is uncertain and he wasn't well enough to speak to Boston 25, his family thanked everyone in a statement, saying:

"The Perez family is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of love and support from the first responders Bob works alongside daily, as well as the community he loves dearly.”

Bob's fellow EMT and BEMSRA Vice President Nick Camacho said the money they’ve raised is the very least they could do –  for someone who's touched and saved so many lives.

"If anybody deserves it, Bob Perez deserves it - I can tell you from first-hand experience," Camacho said.
