Amazon preparing to expand footprint in Boston

Amazon is taking over 16 stories in the Seaport, and it’s not even their headquarters.

A developer submitted plans to the city of Boston this week for a new development in the Seaport. It would include a new office for Amazon and create up to 2,000 jobs.

The project is expected to get the green light, and under the proposed deal Amazon would occupy 16 stories.

That’s nearly 430,000 square feet of an 18-story building that was recently permitted along East Service Road.

Amazon would also have the option to lease a second building in the same project at the corner of Congress Street and Boston Wharf Road.

That would give Amazon more than 1 million square feet of office space in all.

This will triple the e-commerce workforce in Boston and Cambridge, and make the company one of the region’s biggest private employers.

The project has the potential to make Boston one of Amazon’s largest outposts beyond the company’s Seattle base headquarters.

But to clarify – this is not part of Amazon’s second world headquarters which would bring in 50,000 jobs.

The company still hasn’t made a decision on that.

The Seaport deal is not expected to be finalized for several weeks.
