AG: MBTA fare box repairman stole $80K from machines

BOSTON — An MBTA employee stole more than $80,000 from fare boxes he was supposed to be repairing, according to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office.

Stephen Fagerberg, 55, was arrested and charged with stealing from the MBTA's fare collection boxes.
Massachusetts State Police Investigators worked with MBTA police to track down Fagerberg, who is an automated fare technician with the T.

Fagerberg pleaded not guilty to one count of larceny over $1,200 in a continuous scheme in Roxbury District Court Wednesday morning.

He had been under investigation since April. Investigators conducted an undercover operation that included putting marked bills in fare collection boxes serviced by Fagerberg. They say investigators caught Fagerberg putting those marked bills into his bank account at a drive-up ATM.

The theft took place over several months and police say it totaled up to more than $80,000.
