Attleboro murder victim was in town for brother's funeral, family says

Police have arrested one person in connection with the murder of a 34-year-old man in an apparent marijuana-related shooting.

Around 11 p.m. Monday night, police were called to the South Avenue home for a shooting. The caller told police there were people inside looking to steal marijuana and that someone had fired multiple shots.

The victim, identified as 34-year-old Thomas Pomare of Santa Barbara, California, was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Investigators say they have arrested Christopher Johnson of Attleboro, charging him with misleading a criminal investigation. Johnson is not charged in the murder, but they do believe he was there and when they asked him questions, they say he lied to them over and over. He appeared in court Wednesday.

Police sya Pomare was staying at 148 South Ave. in Attleboro Monday night with his friend and his friend's mother. While they were outside smoking, police say at least two armed suspects approached the home with the intent to rob them. Police say Pomare was inside sleeping and woke up in the middle of the robbery.

Pomare's family says he was visiting from California because his younger brother was killed a couple of weeks ago in a Cambridge shooting. No arrest has been made in that case.

"Thomas was here to mourn with the family. So obviously this was unforeseen. Nothing any family could ever expect," Pomare's aunt told Boston 25 News.

Johnson had just bailed out of jail on the day of the murder. He is being held on $250,000 bail.

Police say this remains an active and ongoing investigation.
