'It was just my day': Firefighter recalls saving mother & son from Dorchester fire

BOSTON — A firefighter said he doesn't think of himself as a hero, but those who have seen his dramatic rescue beg to differ.

“Best case scenario was what happened last night,” said Patrick Callahan.

On Wednesday night Boston firefighter Callahan saved a mother and her young son from third-floor window as the triple-decker went up in flames in Dorchester.

It was captured on video, showing the child dangling from the home. Now hundreds on social media are praising Callahan for what he says is just his job.

“I was just trying to console him as best as I could, his mother was still up in the window, you know that could have been horrific,” said Callahan.

He said it was only a matter of minutes that could have changed the outcome of this story.

The mother in the video, Marilyn Abad, said she went to the window with her son because they couldn't breathe - the house was black with smoke.

"Thank you so much for saving my life Que muchas gracias por salvar mi vida," she said.

Callahan says it's just part of his job and he couldn't have done it without his team.

"I'm not a hero by any means, that's crazy. It was just my day. The guy to the left and right of me, they would have done the same thing,” he said.

Abad and her son were treated for smoke inhalation, along with one firefighter. Fortunately, everyone is expected to be okay.
