Police: 5 Plymouth students sent to hospital after eating pot brownies

PLYMOUTH, Mass. — Five students went to the hospital Friday for adverse effects, including troubled breathing, after eating brownies laced with marijuana, said police.

“One of them was having a hard time breathing, some respiratory issues. I think it just escalated from there,” said Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri.

A 13-year-old Plymouth South Middle School student has been arrested and charged with allegedly distributing marijuana and being in possession of more than an ounce of it.

One witness saw the ambulances showing up at the middle school and did not know what to think at first.

"Three people got taken out with two ambulances and then about a half hour later another ambulance showed up. About an hour after that another ambulance showed up," said witness Steven Bettencourt. "I just hope it's not serious and they'll learn their lesson from this."

Five boys, 13 and 14-years-old, were transported to Beth Israel Deaconess in Plymouth.

"The brownies were eaten outside of the classroom and were shared by another student,” said Superintendent Dr. Gary Maestas.
