No decision yet on if NRG Stadium roof will be opened or closed

HOUSTON — Open or closed? The NFL has yet to make a decision if the retractable roof of NRG stadium will be open or closed for the Super Bowl this Sunday.

While weather conditions and fan comfort are the driving factors of having the roof either open or closed, more times than not at NRG Stadium in Houston, it is closed. The Texans played every single home game this season with the roof closed. However, the NFL said the hood will be open on Sunday if the weather cooperates.

The NFL has set ground rules for teams with retractable roofs. Typically the home team will notify the referee or ground operations up to 90 minutes prior to kick off if the roof will be open or closed. It will need to be in that position before warm-ups. The conference championships and the Super Bowl are league games and the commissioner has the sole authority over the status of the retractable roof.

No NFL game has had a reversal of the pregame decision.

In Houston, the team’s guidelines to consider if the roof will be open is that the temperature needs to be between 65 and 78 degrees with no significant threat of rain.

While the weather has been great the majority of this week, the chance of showers moves in this weekend. On Sunday the shower chance will be ending near kick-off with temps in the 70s.
