Spring Training: Sox to Watch

DEDHAM — With Spring Training underway, here are a few Boston Red Sox to monitor as it ramps up:

David Price -- While he likely won't be in game action until later in Spring Training, it is still crucial for Price to get off on the right foot. The left-hander was effective last season in his two months in the rotation, going 5-3 with a 3.85 ERA, before heading to the DL with elbow inflammation. When he returned, he was sent to the bullpen, where he was lights-out, not allowing a run over 15.1 innings. Expect the 32-year-old to be monitored heavily as he works his way back into the rotation.

Blake Swihart -- Swihart's MLB career can be best described as a rollercoaster thus far. The 25-year-old has gone from catcher, to left field to even fielding some ground balls at first base. Injuries and inconsistency have been at the forefront of what has plagued him since being drafted by the Red Sox as a first-round pick in 2011. He has come out and said he wants to catch, but there could be an opening at second base he can seize for a couple months. Recently, he's been dealing with an issue related to a parasite. If Swihart comes and produces this spring, it is hard to see the Red Sox not giving him a shot, especially given their power void.

Brian Johnson -- Out of minor-league options, the 27-year-old southpaw will either crack the MLB roster, or he'll be designated for assignment. With Fernando Abad and Robbie Ross likely not coming back, and the Red Sox rotation seemingly set for now, Johnson's only spot seems to be in the bullpen. It would be reasonable to expect him to receive a few appearances in high-leverage situations this spring.
