Red Sox place Matt Barnes on DL

The Red Sox have placed Matt Barnes on the 10-day disabled list with lower-back strain. He has been replaced on the roster by Hector Velazquez, who has played sporadically for the Sox this season.

Barnes has struggled, most notably on the road, in his relief role. Monday night, he surrendered the game-tying run against Cleveland.

Last Friday against New York, Barnes gave up two runs on four hits during a Yankees four-run rally in the seventh inning.

Rosters expand to 40 players on September 1, which should allow both Barnes and Valazquez to remain with the club when Barnes is eligible to return from the DL.
