Patriots will not place franchise tag on Dont'a Hightower

FOXBORO — The agent of Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower has confirmed to multiple outlets that the Patriots do not intend to place the franchise tag on Hightower before tomorrow's deadline to do so.

ESPN's Adam Schefter was first to report the latest news in Hightower's negotiation for a new deal.

Without a franchise designation, Hightower will become an unrestricted free agent and will be free to negotiate a new deal with all 32 NFL teams, including the Patriots.

Hightower and his agents are free to continue negotiations with the Patriots between now and March 9, when the bidding will be open to every team.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2012 draft, Hightower has become an invaluable cog in the Patriots defense, serving as captain while calling defensive signals. His sack of Matt Ryan, which forced a fumble that was recovered by Alan Branch, was the turning point of Super Bowl LI, serving as a spark plug that led to New England 34-28 overtime win.

During the five years of his rookie contract, Hightower earned $15,475,000.  He earned $7,751,000 in 2016.
