Papi One-On-One with FOX25: The Final Weekend

BOSTON — "It's a journey that has been really special and me and my family really appreciate how it's gone on," said a smiling David Ortiz while sitting alongside his father, Lero, on Saturday afternoon across from Fenway Park.

On his final regular season weekend, Ortiz took the time to sit down for an exclusive one-on-one interview with FOX25 at his new 47 Big Papi Pop-up shop on Yawkey Way.

The store is dedicated paying homage to Ortiz with his just-launched '47 Limited Edition David Ortiz Final Season Collection.

"David Ortiz is not only the greatest player, he is also the greatest human being," said 47 co-owner Bobby D'Angelo. "We worked with David to see what best fit his personality, so we created this line to commemorate his final season."

The store, located across from Fenway and next to The Souvenir Store is now open on Red Sox game days for the rest of the regular season and through the playoffs.

For Ortiz, he's proud to be able to share this line with Red Sox fans. "It feels good. If the fans want, they can come in and enjoy it and get some of my personal items. This is the place."

One of the qualities I have always admired about Ortiz is how he treats people. In my dealings with him, he always treats people with respect, whether it's a superstar from an opposing team or a worker from the visiting clubhouse -- or even the average fan.

I asked him where that comes from.

"From this man right here, this is my Pop!" David said, patting his father, Lero, on the back and pulling him close. "He raised me the right way."

In our conversation, I also asked Ortiz about his relationship with Tom Brady and it's clearly a special one.

"Tom Brady is special man. He's a guy that he cares. He's a guy who takes things personal. He's excited when he plays. And the people that know him as a person know that he is a great guy also. It's like the perfect combination to be who he is and everybody learns from it," Ortiz said.

You can see the full one-on-one conversation with Ortiz on FOX25 Sunday Night Sports Wrap at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2.
