Big Papi for Mayor? Sox slugger receives hundreds of write-in votes

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) -- It appears Mayor-elect Marty Walsh and City Councilor John Connolly had a hard-hitting opponent in the race for Mayor of Boston.

World Series MVP David Ortiz received 560 write-in votes altogether, but officials don't count those not cast for declared write-in candidates. Therefore, the exact number of votes the World Series MVP received is unclear.

State Rep. Marty Walsh got almost 52 percent of the vote to beat City Councilor John Connolly in the contest to replace Thomas Menino, the city's longest-serving mayor, who decided not to seek re-election.

Ortiz may not have won the election, but he was second to none with many other accolades this season. The Sox slugger received his sixth Silver Slugger award and his third MVP title. Big Papi is tied with Wade Boggs and Manny Ramirez for the most Silver Sluggers in Sox history.
