Martinez goes 3-3 as Red Sox tie Rays

FORT MYERS — JD Martinez collected three hits, scored a run and drove in another as the Red Sox tied the Rays Thursday afternoon in Fort Myers.

After a hitless effort against Minnesota in his Spring Training debut, Martinez looked more comfortable at the plate. He batted fourth as Boston's designated hitter.

After Mookie Betts singled in the bottom of the first inning, Martinez followed shortly with a shot to right field that was misplayed. The outfield miscue allowed Betts to score from first and Martinez to advance to second. He was credited with a double and an RBI.

Martinez singled to right field in the bottom of the third and was stranded on third base to end the inning.

The Sox capitalized on his single to center in the fifth inning, with Jackie Bradley, Jr. driving Martinez home with a fielder's choice groundout to shortstop.

The Red Sox trailed 6-2 entering the bottom of the fifth, but scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh to tie the score.

Boston travels to Jupiter to face Miami Friday afternoon.
