Marcus Smart has thumb surgery. May return for playoffs

Smart expected to be out at least six weeks

DEDHAM — With the NBA playoffs set to start in just over four weeks, the Boston Celtics are as banged up as they have been all season.

And now the word is that they will be without guard Marcus Smart for the remainder of the regular season after Smart had surgery on Friday to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb.  The story was first reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The hope according to sources is that Smart will be able to play again in six weeks.  That would put the Celtics at the end of a first round playoff series or beginning of a second round series.

Smart suffered the injury on Sunday against the Indiana Pacers while diving to the floor for a loose ball in the first half. The Celtics will play the Orlando Magic in Orlando on Friday night
