BOSTON — After spending four seasons with the Red Sox it appears Koji Uehara is moving on. A Japanese outlet, Nikkan Sports, reported Uehara had a one-year, $4.5 million agreement with the Cubs pending a physical.
Uehara signed as a free agent with the Red Sox in 2013. He took over the closer’s role midway through his first season and played a major role in the 2013 World Series championship.
Although 2016 was his worst season with the Red Sox Uehara was still productive with a 3.45 ERA, 7 saves in 50 appearances. In his Red Sox career Uehara had a 2.19 ERA in the regular season and allowed just one earned run in 15 2/3 innings with the Sox in the postseason. He was the closer for three of his four seasons in Boston.
