Jerry Remy will not return to booth this season

BOSTON — NESN Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy provided an update on his health Wednesday as he continues to recover from lung surgery that was performed in June.

"I'm still recovering from the lung cancer surgery I had back in June and will soon enter the next stage of my cancer treatment," Remy said in a statement. "I've met with my doctors and I'll start receiving chemotherapy treatments late this month. I have some difficult challenges in front of me, but I plan to keep fighting this thing. I'd like to thank everybody for their many thoughts and prayers and continued support."

Remy will begin chemotherapy treatments in two weeks and will not return to the broadcast booth this season.

Remy's battle with lung cancer dates back to 2008. A portion of his lung was removed in the most recent procedure.

When Remy originally announced he was opting for surgery, his hope was to return to the booth shortly after the All-Star break in July.

The Red Sox have used a number of analysts while Remy has been recovering, including Dennis Eckersley, Mike Timlin, Jonny Gomes and most recently, Wade Boggs.

Steve Lyons has not appeared on NESN in recent weeks as he is dealing with a charge of domestic violence in California.

Remy, who played for the Angels and Red Sox from 1975-84, has worked with NESN for 30 years.
