Groesbeck reacts to acquisition of Irving

BOSTON — Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck couldn't hold back his excitement when asked about his team's acquisition of four-time All-Star Kyrie Irving.

"He's an All-Star starter, he's a trascendent talent," said Grousbeck. "We are excited to put him together with Gordon Hayward, Al Horford, Marcus Smart. We want this team to go for Banner 18 and we need to get the best possible players to do that and that's what we're trying to do."

Grousbeck was in Brighton for a special "topping" ceremony at the Celtics new practice facility, which is still under construction in the Boston Landing area next to the Bruins facility and the New Balance Headquarters.

He was actively involved in the discussions that led to the trade sending Isaiah Thomas to Cleveland, along with Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the 2018 draft pick the Celtics acquired from the Nets.

"I helped," said Grousbeck. "We talked a lot about it. We approved the trade because we felt it was in the best interest of the Celtics, but we're giving up a lot and we're going to miss those guys."

When asked if the Celtics were in position to beat the Cavaliers right now, Grousbeck wouldn't take the bait.

"I'm not going to make any predictions about that," said Grousbeck. "I think we're in a good position to represent Celtic pride very well. We have a really strong team, an up-and-coming team. A young team with more youth on the way. So we will be good for a sustained period of time and it starts now."

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was also thrilled with the trade.

"The Celtics, I think, made a great trade last night," said Mayor Walsh. "That's going to build this team strong for years to come. We still have a first-round draft pick next year - we traded one - and we have a couple of first-rounders this year along with the two additions. I'm excited about the Celtics."
