NEW YORK — Bruins forward David Backes has been suspended three games for injuring Red Wings' forward Frans Nielsen with a blow to the head in Tuesday's game at TD Garden.

Backes, who has never been fined or suspended throughout his NHL career, is expected to appeal the suspension.

The NHL Player Safety office released a video detailing the play and the reasoning behind their discipline decision.
