Firehouse Friday: Cambridge Fire Department

Career firefighters have called it one of the worst fires they’ve ever seen. 10 alarms and 25 communities responded this past Saturday to a fire in Cambridge. Today we are saluting those fire responders for turning what could have been a tragedy into a miracle.

Calls came in from several people Saturday afternoon. The first responders knew there was a significant fire, but most likely did not anticipate it’s actual size.  Deputy Chief Michael Morrissey was first on the scene and began working immediately. The police partners were helping to evacuate people allowing the firefighters to focus on getting water on the fire. The blaze continued for several hours and demanded help from 25 surrounding communities. Metro Fire, a mutual aid system, had structured responses for the 10 alarm call, which was a huge reason for the success.

Cambridge Fire Chief Gerald Reardon explains:  “As much of a tragedy as this is, the fact that we had no loss of life and no major injuries is the most important fact in my mind. And I understand for those who lost personal possessions it’s tragic, but it’s certainly not as tragic as losing a life over it. And we’re very, very fortunate that it didn’t happen.”

Thank you to all to the first responders for keeping our community safe!
