Wynn starts work on $2 billion Everett casino

EVERETT, Mass. — Wynn Resorts started construction on its $2 billion Boston-area casino after years of legal fights Thursday.

The Las Vegas-based company is building a resort casino complex on the Mystic River waterfront in Everett.

The project will employ 4,000 construction works to build a 500 suite hotel, multiple restaurants, retail stores, meeting space, and of course slot machines and table games, as reported on FOX25 News at 5.

“This is the official commencement of the largest single phase private construction in the history of Commonwealth,” said Enrique Zuniga with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.

As reported on the FOX25 News, the site was formerly a chemical plant. Some environmental cleanup work was done earlier this year, and Wynn halted progress while legal challenges played out. On Wednesday, Wynn said it received a state environmental permit, one of the project's last major roadblocks.

"We have 500,000 tons of soil to get off this site in the next six months," said Chris Gordon with Wynn Resorts.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone has expressed concern over the casino's impact on his city, and up until Wednesday had tried to stop the state from issuing Wynn an important environmental permit.

In a statement to FOX25, Curtatone said he's no longer plans to fight Wynn on permits, but the city continues e to "evaluate the decision" and have not ruled out the option "to pursue judicial review."

Wynn hopes to frame the resort by 2017, move furniture by 2018 and be ready for a 2019 summer opening.
