WORCESTER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Leaders of Worcester Polytechnic Institute's SigEp chapter brought charges against a fellow student after learning he was responsible for degrading behavior and online abuse.
At least three women from WPI reported that while having sex with fraternity members, other members rushed in and poured water on them or hit them with ice or pudding. The incidents made their way onto a Facebook page called WPI Confessions. The page allows students to post anonymously about campus life.
WPI's Dean of Students Philip Clay told FOX 25 that the administration was contacted by students that were so concerned about the anonymous posts and the comments that followed, they felt something had to be done.
Clay says allegations like this are taken very seriously, but this is the first time it has come from a Facebook post. The posts have since been removed, and leaders of the SigEp chapter have brought charges against the student they believe was behind the abuse, according to the fraternities Communication Manager Rob Jepson. The student decided not to participate in the fraternity's judicial process and resigned. He was barred from entering the fraternity's facility on campus, Jepson said.
The fraternity's headquarters staff and local leadership are working with campus officials to continue the investigation into the anonymous posts. The chapter has been asked to temporarily suspend operations that are not related to the investigation or their judicial process, Jepson said.
"SigEp strongly believes in promoting respect for women and all human beings, and any behavior that demeans women is not tolerated by the Fraternity. If other individuals were involved, they will face a similar judicial process," Jepson said in a release.
