World Series keeps crowds away from Hadley meeting

HADLEY, Mass. (AP) — The World Series is being blamed for Hadley's failure to draw a quorum of registered voters at Town Meeting.

As a result, local officials have rescheduled last Thursday's special Town Meeting for 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that residents are expected to discuss a nearly $1 million sewer pump station upgrade and the future of three municipal buildings.

Only 86 registered voters turned out for the meeting, falling short of the 100 needed for quorum.

The meeting was set to begin one hour before Game 2 of the World Series between the Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals, which likely kept some voters at home. Town Administrator David G. Nixon said he "can only imagine" that the ballgame was a major factor.

No World Series game is scheduled for Tuesday.
