Worcester City Council votes to go all in on PawSox

WORCESTER, Mass. — Batter up! The PawSox, that’s Pawtucket Red Sox currently play ball at McCoy Stadium, but it’s outdated and talks with Pawtucket and Rhode Island to fund a new ballpark have so far failed.

But there’s a second option. Massachusetts’ second biggest city Worcester is offering itself as a new home for the PawSox.

“Basically, it’s to show the enthusiasm we have for this project and we’re a long way away,” said Mayor Petty.

The city council passed a resolution for Worcester to do all it can to lure the PawSox north.

“We have an empty lot, they need a place to play. Let’s put it together.”

But that could be pricey. PawSox chairman and co-owner Larry Lucchino asked for $83 million in Rhode Island, but Tuesday night on WEEI Radio, Lucchino said staying in Pawtucket is not a sure thing.

“Well that remains to be seen. We’re pretty proud of the long history there and the connections that exist there,” said Lucchino.

There is still a long process ahead.
