• Worcester cab driver strangled during armed robbery

WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester police are looking for a man who robbed a taxi driver Wednesday morning.

Police say just before noon Wednesday, they were called to Merrifield Street for a reported armed robbery.

The cab driver told police he was sitting in his cab parked in a lot near Bell Pond when a man came up and asked to be driven to an address on Merrifield Street. When they got to Merrifield Street, the man asked the driver to stop. That's when the driver said the man reached from the back seat and put his hands around the driver's neck. He says the suspect then stuck a hard object against the side of his head and demanded money.

The driver said he did not see a weapon, but he was certain it was a handgun.

The suspect took cash, the driver's cell phone and the ignition key to the cab and ran off. He was last seen running down Merrifield Street before turning right onto Elliot Street.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male, approximately 6'0" tall with a medium build.

Police searched the area, but did not find the man.

    The driver was not injured.
