Woodstove to blame for fire that claimed the life of soon-to-be dad in Westwood

WESTWOOD, Mass. — Fire officials said a woodstove is to blame for sparking a fire that claimed the life of a soon-to-be father in Westwood Jan. 10.

First responders were called to the home at 70 Tamarack Rd., around 5:30 p.m., and when they arrived they found heavy smoke and flames coming from inside.

A man, who was later identified as 47-year-old Michael Lennon, was pulled from the burning home, but despite efforts by first responders he was pronounced dead a short time later.

On Wednesday, State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey and other state and local officials said after the investigation they determined that the cause of the fire was a woodstove.

Investigators said the fire started in the living room, which is where the woodstove is located.

However, officials said, whether there was a failure of the woodstove, an ember escaped or combustibles were too close to the stove remains unknown.

The fire has been labeled an accident.

“I want to extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Lennon,” Westwood fire Chief John Deckers said.

This is the second fatal fire started by a woodstove this winter. Officials say a malfunctioning woodstove caused a fire in Oxford that killed a 93-year-old woman.

"These are safe appliances to use, but that is based on best practices and procedures in place," said Ostroskey.

Bruce Keltie, who owns Commonwealth Fireplace, says woodstoves are designed to burn 24 hours a day, but only if they're properly installed and specific regulations are followed.

"Each stove is going to be different and they are all strictly tested in that regard. We help you try to figure out based on what you want out of the stove, where you want to put it in your home," said Keltie.

If you do choose to use a fireplace or woodstove, Ostroskey says you need to get them inspected and cleaned routinely.
