Woman rescued by police officer after driving car into icy pond

GROVELAND, Mass. — A police detective acted fast after he saw a woman trapped inside her car that had been driven into frigid waters on Saturday morning.

The first officer to respond to the scene, he jumped into the water without any special gear to protect him from the cold and was able to pull the woman out of the water.

It is still unclear why or even how the woman drove into Johnson Pond in Groveland. This incident remains under investigation by local police.

The woman was taken to Lawrence General Hospital with facial injuries but it expected to recover - thanks in large part to a quick decision that made the difference between life and death.

"He was on scene within two minutes of the call - the water was chest deep and due to the frigid weather and conditions it was pretty crucial that he got there in a timely fashion," said Groveland Police Department Sgt. Riley.

Thankfully, none of the officers or firefighters that responded to the scene were injured.
