Woman mistakes super glue for eye drops, glues eye shut

FLORIDA (MyFoxBoston.com) -- One Florida woman’s eye was glued shut after a friend accidentally put super glue in her eye instead of eye drops.

Katherine Gaydos told WPBF-TV she asked her friend to get her a bottle of eye drops after she felt something blow into her eye.

"As soon as I felt it burn, I closed my eye and screamed and called 911," she told WPBF-TV.

The glue sealed her eye shut. A week later, it was still closed.

In a video, Gaydos demonstrates an attempt to open her eye, which remains sealed shut.

"It's stuck to my eyelids and my eyeball, and it really hurts," she told the station in her first interview.

Gaydos said she went to a doctor and was turned away because she didn’t have enough money to pay for treatment.

"He was talking about doing surgery to try and save my eye, but now, I don't know what to do. I don't have a job, no insurance or any money," she said.

After her story aired on television, Gaydos received a call from a different doctor at the same office.

This doctor told her to come in again and was eventually able to pry her eye open.

“He put Lidocaine above and below my eye and just pulled on it until it finally opened,” she said. “He said I should get my sight back and not have permanent damage.”

Gaydos was told to return to the doctor on Friday to get the glue scraped off her cornea.

She told WPBF-TV that the office didn't say anything to her about payment.
