Woman hit, killed by school bus in Worcester

WORCESTER (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A 20-year-old woman was hit and killed by a school bus in Worcester on Friday night.

The unidentified woman was a passenger in a car stopped at a red light in the left lane of Southbridge Street just before 6:30 p.m. A school bus with no passengers was in the right lane beside the car.

Investigators say while the light was red, the woman exited the car and walked around the front of it to the rear driver's side door where she removed items from the back seat. She then walked back in front of the car and entered the crosswalk. As the woman began walking in the crosswalk the light turned green and the 62-year-old female bus driver accelerated, hitting the woman. Police say the driver did not see the woman in front of the bus.

The 20-year-old was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased just before 7 p.m.

No citations were issued on Friday night. An investigation is ongoing.
