Woman gives birth to baby boy on Mass. Pike

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — A woman gave birth to a baby boy on the Massachusetts Turnpike Sunday.

State police say they received a call Sunday night from a Framingham couple, saying the woman was in labor.

The couple had been driving east on their way to Mass General Hospital, but hit traffic in Watertown.

“We hit traffic at about exit 17, and I just screamed ‘call 911’” Emily Redfern said.

State police say troopers and Boston EMS responded. They were unable to get Redfern to the hospital before she gave birth.

Emily's husband Michael had been driving, but once it became apparent they weren't going to make it he stopped to help her. A state trooper arrived a short time later.

“He was awesome, he was calming me and Michael down, making jokes,” Emily said.

State police say she delivered a baby boy in the back of an ambulance around 7:35 p.m. The woman and baby were then taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

State police say it was "excellent work by all involved."
