Woman found dead at Super 8 hotel room with infant by her side

BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) – A 13-month-old girl was found cuddling against her mother's dead body in a Brockton motel on Sunday, but the death is not considered suspicious, authorities said Monday.

"This does not appear to be a criminal matter," said Bridget Norton Middleton, a spokeswoman for the Plymouth district attorney.

An autopsy on the woman in her mid-40s is scheduled to determine a cause of death, Middleton said.

Although Middleton would not confirm it, police said it appears the woman died of a drug overdose.

No names were made public because the death is not considered a crime. The district attorney investigates all unattended deaths as a matter of routine.

Brockton police received a call just before 2 p.m. Sunday reporting an unresponsive woman in a room at the Super 8 hotel on Westgate Drive.

The baby was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but was reportedly in good condition, Middleton said.

State child welfare officials were notified.
