Authorities say she dropped off her 7-year-old golden retriever, who has now been renamed Henry, at an animal hospital in May, claiming she found the dog on the beach.

The dog had a tumor on its side the size of a basketball.  The size of the tumor affected Henry’s ability to move and other basic functions, according to the D.A.’s office. It also nearly doubled his body weight.
North Beach Animal Control took custody of Henry and provided medical treatment. Henry underwent a successful surgery to remove the tumor. He’s living with a foster family while receiving cancer treatments.

Haughton is scheduled for arraignment early next year.
Authorities want to remind pet owners that there is assistance out there for people who can’t afford medical treatment for sick animals. They can turn them over to animal control, or welfare agencies.
