Woman behind wheel in grandmother, child crash held without bail

WORCESTER, Mass. — The woman who hit a grandmother and a 5-year-old with her SUV was ordered held without bail Thursday.

The crash happened Wednesday in front of St. Vincent Hospital. Police said 33-year-old Cassandra McAuliffe was chasing her ex-boyfriend when she lost control and hit the pair on the sidewalk. The grandmother and the girl were coming back from the CVS when they were pinned against the fence. Both were rushed to the hospital and listed in critical condition. The child has since been upgraded to fair condition.

Derek Bonin, the ex that was being followed, showed up to court Thursday. He said McAuliffe showed up to his job asking for drug money and thinks she could have been high.

"Was a call for help to the police station. I was on my way there. They told me the officers were waiting. At the police station," he said.

Bonin said that the couple had been dating for three years and recently split up, after having a child together.

McAuliffe is being held without bail. She was ordered to have no contact with Bonin except for matters pertaining to their 16-month-old daughter.
