SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP)- Officials say a 65-year-old woman has died after a kitchen fire at her Springfield home.
A fire department spokesman says Dorothy Lee was pulled from the window of the one-story ranch in the city's Sixteen Acres neighborhood just after midnight Wednesday. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Lee's daughter and the family dog survived.
The death remains under investigation but smoke inhalation is the likely cause.
Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger says two pans of food had been left unattended on the stove. He said the blaze quickly spread from the kitchen, causing an estimated $80,000 in damage. He said no smoke detectors were found in the house.
The state Fire Marshal's office is assisting in the investigation.
