Wintry mix hammers the Bay State

BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts is getting socked by a winter storm that caused havoc in the Midwest in South, but which is bringing mostly rain and strong winds to the Bay State.

The Boston area woke up Thursday to heavy, wind-whipped rain, but no snow.

Areas to the north and west of the state were getting several inches of heavy, wet snow.

The National Weather Service say some coastal areas could get wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour. There have been no reports of widespread power outages early Thursday.

Some areas of western Massachusetts could get as much as 10 inches of snow before the storm lifts off to the north Thursday afternoon. The state reduced the speed limit on the Massachusetts Turnpike to 45 miles per hour in the western part of the state.
