• Wintry conditions Wednesday mess with morning commute

With spring like temperatures Monday…it's hard to imagine today many folks will have a fresh blanket of snow.  So let's get right to it.

A very fast moving area of low pressure is bringing accumulating snow and a period of mixed precipitation to the region. There is a Winter Weather Advisory until 3 p.m. for most of the state except coastal areas and southeast Mass. Accumulating snow of two to five inches will develop and continue through the morning commute, creating slippery and hazardous conditions on untreated roadways and surfaces.

Snow will continue into the afternoon/early evening before tapering off. However, as rain mixes at the south coast, the rain/snow line will continue to shift north through the day allowing a change to rain for areas south of the Mass. Turnpike.

Nonetheless, there still may be a period of accumulating snow early on in the day for those areas and that could lead to some difficult travel conditions.

The exact movement and location of the rain/snow line is hard to pinpoint at this time, but right now it looks like the Cape will see mainly rain with maybe a few wet flakes mixing it at first.

There may be a coating to a couple sloppy inches before a transition to rain through the southeast and along the coast into Boston.

Close to 95/128 and areas west ( a good portion of the state), we may see anywhere from two to four inches of snow, while a few spots may see brief periods of moderate snowfall and may pick up an inch or two more!

So let's look at the timeline…

Morning Commute: Light to at times moderate snow mixing with sleet/rain at the coast. Arm of the Cape will likely be all rain. Expect snow to quickly cover the roadways and conditions to be slippery.

Mid-Morning: Rain/snow light creeps northward near the MA Pike. Rain to the south…accumulating snow continues to the north, even at the coast.

Lunch: Rain/Snow line continues to be near the MA Pike and some mixing will occur in Boston. Still light to at times moderate snow to the north.

Mid-Afternoon:  Rain/Snow line looks to shift further north, still all snow along the MA/NH border. Period of mixing for central MA.

Evening Commute-Evening: Winding down as precip tapers… Few lingering snow showers in southern NH.

This is not a big storm, by New England standards, but the wintry mess will impact a lot of folks, especially during the morning commute. It's never easy in New England when you have that pesky rain/snow line that will enhance snowfall or wash it away in areas, so stay tuned as we'll provide you with the latest updates as new information become available.
