Widow of marathon bombing suspect still of interest to investigators

(MyFoxBoston.com) – The widow of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev remains of interest to investigators and still faces the threat of criminal charges, reports the DailyMail.

While 24-year-old Katherine Russell has cooperated with investigators following the April 15 bombings, she is not in the clear, especially after investigators discovered she made a phone call to her late-husband while he was running from the authorities in the days following the bombings, a source close to the investigation told the site.

Investigators want to know what was said during the alleged call; however, information exchanged between a husband and wife in the context of marriage is protected by law. The spousal privilege law would not apply if, for example, a husband dies and has shared information with a criminal co-conspirator, reports the DailyMail.

Russell has reportedly hired an attorney who specializes in terrorism cases and has represented terror suspects in the past.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed on April 18 following a shootout with police in an East Watertown neighborhood. His younger brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was captured on April 19 after he was found hiding in a boat in a Franklin Street backyard.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to 30 federal charges.
