#WhyNotDevin blessed by Pope Francis in Rome

ROME — A 6-year-old Framingham boy battling a rare form of cancer had a very special moment with Pope Francis while in Rome last week.

Devin Suau's mother, Christine, shared photos on her Facebook page of the family meeting Pope Francis.

“It was an unbelievably surreal moment,” she said in a Facebook post. “One we will never forget. Totally by chance, we met a woman whose name in English was miracle, translated to the Pope for us and Colin asked the Pope in Spanish to please bless his brother. We have faith that God is protecting Devin and we pray every moment that he is being healed. We are so grateful that so many people are praying for Devin too."

Devin was given between eight months and two years to live when he was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). There is no known cure, and his family was hopeful the hashtag #WhyNotDevin would raise awareness in time to find a cure.

Devin was diagnosed while he was being evaluated for a concussion he received while snowboarding.

"Tomorrow and in the days to come we really need your prayers," Christine said in her Facebook post. "Devin is having an MRI tomorrow to see how he responded to the radiation. God willing he responded well and the tumor has shrunk."

His mom started the #WhyNotDevin campaign to find a cure for his type of cancer.

A GoFundMe page set up for Devin and his family has raised nearly $250,000.
