Strong winds follow Christmas snow, thousands without power

Christmas day started with several inches of snow for many people across New England. Some of the largest amounts fell in Northern Massachusetts and New Hampshire. As the snow moves out, temperatures are expected to drop. This story will have the latest updates at the top.

10 p.m.:

Only about 1,100 Mass. residents are still without power, the hardest hit areas for wind damage remain the Cape and South Shore.

Looking ahead, temperatures aren't expected to get above freezing in the next seven days. Meteorologist Shiri Spear will be in starting at 4 a.m. with the latest details.

4 p.m.

There are still nearly 10,000 people without power, many in Plymouth in Barnstable counties. Looking at the snow totals, Northern Essex and Middlesex counties seem to have the highest accumulation. Seven inches in Boxford appears to be the highest, with 6.2 inches in Billerica

2 p.m.:

The snow has been replaced by strong winds in southeast Massachusetts. Many areas that didn't see much snow are going to be the hardest hit by wind. Thousands are without power on Cape Cod after several trees were knocked down by gusts above 60 m.p.h.

NOON:

Most of the snow has moved out of Massachusetts dropping several inches north of the Mass. Pike. Areas across the South Shore and Cape Cod saw just a coating. Jason will have a closer look at totals as more reports come in later in the day.
