What to know about Saturday's Women's March in Boston

BOSTON — Thousands are expected to congregate in downtown Boston Saturday for the local Women's March for America. 

With the national Women's March happening in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, more than 400 cities around the world are having local versions of the march.

While it is a "women's" march, all are invited to attend and march for solidarity against hate, intolerance and inequality, says the Women's Boston March for America organizers.

Saturday's event is part of a nationwide series of post-inauguration marches and rallies.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Attorney General Maura Healey and other leaders are expected to attend.

The Boston event kicks off with speeches on the Common. The speeches are followed by a mile-long procession that returns to the downtown park.

Organizers say as many as 80,000 participants are expected.

The timing

The event starts at 11 a.m. at the Boston Common and runs until 3 p.m. From 11 a.m. to noon there is a program on the Common, which is followed by a people's oath and call to march. The actual march will happen from 12:30 to 2:00 along Commonwealth Avenue. The event will end at the Common with a community gathering.

The route

The march is one mile along, starting near the corner of Beacon and Charles,

  • Head north along Charles Street;
  • Turning left onto Beacon Street;
  • Left Turn onto Arlington Street;
  • Right turn onto Commonwealth Avenue;
  • Turn around at Clarendon Street, crossing over to other side of Commonwealth Avenue;
  • Head east on Commonwelath Avenue;
  • Right turn onto Arlington Street;
  • Left Turn onto Boylston Street;
  • Cross over Charles and finish march in Boston Common.

Expect traffic restrictions along Charles Street, Beacon Street, Arlington Street, Commonwealth Avenue and Boylston Street Saturday.

What not to bring

The city of Boston has requested no backpacks, large bags or banners on wooden signs or poles. Any signs must be carried by hand and clear bags for belongings are recommended. Bicycles and animals other than service animals are prohibited, along with coolers, balloons and weapons of any kind.
