METHUEN (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A Westford man died and another man was seriously injured in a multi-car crash on Route 495 southbound Friday.
The crash occurred just after 3:30 p.m. near Route 213 in Methuen.
Investigators say 35-year-old Jeffrey Plante of Newburyport was traveling north in a 2005 Toyota Corolla when for an unknown reason his car left the road, hit the median, and went airborne. Plante's car crashed head-on with a 2008 Toyota Camry operated by 32-year-old Kurt Kelly of Westford. Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene.
Plante sustained life threatening injuries and was transported via medical helicopter to a Boston area hospital. His condition remained unknown on Friday night.
Mass. State Police say four cars were involved in the crash.
Both sides of the highway were closed for 45 minutes so that the medical helicopter could land and transport the injured person.
The southbound side of the road remained closed for hours on Friday night as traffic was diverted onto Route 110 in Lawrence. It re-opened by 10 p.m.
