Western Mass. town left without snow plows after fire

SANDIFIELD, Mass. — A western Massachusetts town was without snow removal equipment after its highway department burned down in a fire over the weekend.

The department was set to meet with state officials Monday morning to figure out a way to get snow plows ahead of Tuesday's expected snowfall.

The five-alarm fire broke out Sunday morning, not long after the highway superintendent left the building, according to Sandisfield Fire Chief Ralph Morrison.

Morrison Told Western Mass. News when crews arrived, the building was engulfed.

No one was injured and the cause is still under investigation.

Meanwhile, four of the town's plows are now gone.

Sandisfield's roads superintendent says finding the money to purchase new snow plows could be a problem, as budgets are tight in surrounding towns.
