West Yarmouth man charged with attempted murder of pregnant woman

WEST YARMOUTH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A man was arrested at the Tidewater Motel in West Yarmouth on Tuesday after police responded to a bloody domestic assault.

Police arrived to Room 50 of the motel, where the door had been kicked in, the frame shattered. Inside, they found a "hostile, enraged and uncooperative" man. Matthew Chicoine, 22, of West Yarmouth, continued to yell as he was being arrested and taken to the police cruiser, smashing his head against the car's glass in an attempt to break it.

The victim was in the bathroom, with blood on her hands and face, police said. The woman is five-and-a-half months pregnant, and also has an 18-month-old toddler who was present in the room during the attack, police said.

She described the attack to police, saying that Chicoine smashed her head against a table and the floor, strangled her twice, to the point where she lost consciousness, and kicked the bathroom door in on top of her when she tried to shield her toddler.

Chicoine was taken to Barnstable District Court Tuesday afternoon and was charged with assault and battery on a pregnant person, three counts of aggravated assault and battery armed with a dangerous weapon, attempted murder, being in possession of a dangerous weapon (knife) during a disturbance, intimidation of a witness and two counts of malicious destruction of property.
