Large pipe break in Quincy shoots water 50 feet in the air

QUINCY, Mass. — A large water pipe on Newport Avenue in Quincy broke Wednesday afternoon causing water to shoot 50 feet in the air.

The break occurred near the intersection with Furnace Brook Parkway, forcing cars to be detoured around the area.

Duc Chau was one of the first people who saw the geyser, and immediately called 911.

“I see water coming out of the street. That's why I called 911,” he said. “A lot of water coming in the street.”

The break is also along the Red Line and Commuter Rail tracks between Wallaston and Quincy Center.

The pipe supplied water to a nearby fire hydrant, and according to the Quincy DPW a gate where it connects to the water main broke, causing the leak.

About one million gallons of water is believed to have been spilled from the pipe in the hour it took the DPW to get it under control.
