Watch your mouth: Lawmakers to consider bill punishing cops who swear

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A bill proposed by State Rep. Benjamin Swan would make swearing in the line of duty a fireable offense.

The Boston Herald reports a State House committee was scheduled to consider "An Act to prohibit inappropriate language use by sworn in law officers" Thursday.

While proponents of the Springfield Democrat's proposed legislation say it would help curb the use of racial slurs, some police officials called the bill over the top.

In speaking with the newspaper, Everett Police Chief Steven Mazzie used a scenario in which a 10-year veteran drops an "F-bomb" during an arrest to suggest such terminations would be extreme. Mazzie tells the newspaper police officials would not tolerate such behavior to begin with and that it is hard to "legislate civility."
