WATCH: Mother, daughter nearly hit by distracted driver at bus stop

MILLBURY, Mass. – A mother and daughter can’t believe how close they came to serious injury when an apparently distracted driver blew by a school bus.

Ashley Makridakis was picking up 7-year-old Lyla from the bus stop when the close call happened.

“I was coming back across the street. A driver nearly missed us. The bus driver said, she was texting and driving,” Makridakis told Boston 25 News reporter Malini Basu.

The narrow escape was caught on dashcam, you can even hear the bus driver say goodbye to Lyla.

“I’m looking down at my daughter, asking her how her say was,” Makridakis said. “I was angry at myself for assuming that drivers are responsible enough to see a huge yellow school bus with a stop sign and a mother and child crossing the street.”

The mother of three was doing what she does every day, pick up her daughter from the bus stop on Riverlin Street, just feet from her house. But on Friday, she and her daughter had the scare of her their lives.

The bus driver honked as the speeding car blew by, something Makridakis says saved her and her daughter from being hit.

“He is literally our hero,” she said.

They weren’t able to make out the license plate number of the car, but Makridakis has a message for whoever was driving.

“You know who you are, and get off your phone, and watch where you’re going because you almost cost my daughter and I our lives,” she said.

The family told Boston 25 News the road is notorious for drivers texting while driving because it’s a straightaway street.

Millbury police Chief Donald Desourcy told Boston 25 News Thursday morning that since the incident occurred an officer has been investigating, but the main piece of evidence was the video provided by the bus company.

"Hopefully additional information will develop as a result of the news coverage," he said. "Thankfully the mother and daughter were not injured, and if the operator is located the officer will issue motor vehicle citations."
