WATCH: Crews successfully demolish Eastie building after partial collapse

Crews successfully demolished a building in East Boston Monday morning after it partially collapsed over the weekend, and forcing officials to evacuate nearly 30 people from the area.

Officials said they were worried it could have collapsed on its own at any time, so they needed to demolish what was left of the building.

“It felt like it was right on top of me, and it kept on going.” Grace Magoon said. “I knew something was hitting us. I didn’t know what it was.”

Magoon’s accounting office sits next to the source of the danger -- the residential building on Winthrop Street that partially collapsed.

“It felt as though there was an explosion in the area,” Magoon said. “The while building was shaking.”

Fire and city officials said about 28 people nearby have been displaced due to the instability.

“The building has shifted since we’ve been here,” Boston fire Commissioner Joseph Finn said. “There’s actually a fear the building could come down suddenly.”

Because the building was under construction, no one was inside.

But the initial collapse also caused a ruptured gas line that filled the air with a strong odor and forced officials to hurry to turn off utilities to the area.

“We’re very fortunate and lucky that no one was hurt in these conditions to be honest with you,” Finn said.

Crews were able to safely demolish the rest of the building just before 8:30 a.m.

"As you saw, the way the building came down, it was a total collapse inside," Buddy Christopher, Boston Inspectional Services Department, said. "We're happy it came down that way, but the forensic part will have to be put on hold for now for us to analyze."

City officials have not speculated on a cause for the collapse.
